How to Manage a Cranky Cat

Do you have a grumpy kitty? Just like people, cats all have their own distinct personalities. Some are very sweet and laid-back, and others can be, well, a bit cantankerous. If you have a furry little curmudgeon on your hands, read these tips from a Green Bay, WI veterinarian about dealing with cranky cats.

Veterinary Care

First and foremost, make sure that there isn’t a medical issue behind your kitty’s dour attitude. Have your vet give Fluffy a thorough examination to find out if a health problem is behind her moodiness. If everything checks out, then at least you know you have a grouchy cat, rather than a sick one.

Triggers

Is your kitty sometimes calm and sweet, and sometimes ornery? Try to see if you can identify things that trigger Fluffy’s bad moods. Loud noises, strangers, dogs, other cats, commotion, major changes, and unwanted attention are a few common pet peeves among our feline friends.

Stimulation

Make sure you are offering your cat plenty of stimulation. If Fluffy has nothing to do but stare at the wall all day, boredom may be making her irritable. Give your sour puss plenty of fun toys to take her aggression out on, and offer her at least one comfy napping spot with a good window view.

Purrsonality

If Fluffy is fairly calm until you try to pet her or pick her up, she may simply dislike physical contact. Cats can also be very, very particular about just when and how they should be petted. Don’t force affection on your pet: let her come to you when she wants attention.

Go With The Flow

Learn to recognize some of the telltale signs of feline anger. These include flattened ears, hissing, a lashing tail, and growling. If you see any of these warning signs, just walk away and leave Fluffy alone until she calms down.

Fear

Is your feline friend timid? If so, fear may be making her act aggressive. Give your cat plenty of safe hiding spots to retreat to if she feels scared.

Avoid Punishment

Never punish your cat for misbehaving. Cats don’t understand punishment, so your kitty may not even understand why she’s being reprimanded. Ignore bad behavior, and offer Fluffy toys and treats when she’s being good.
