Keeping Fido Cool

Summer is just around the corner. This time of year can be hard on our canine pals. After all, Fido is already wearing a fur coat! Therefore, it’s important to make sure that your furry buddy stays cool and comfortable as temperatures rise. Read on as a Green Bay, WI vet offers tips on keeping your dog cool this summer.

Summer ‘Do

Some dogs are much more comfortable in summer with a cool summer haircut. This isn’t an across-the-board recommendation, however. If you have a dog with a double coat, such as a Husky or Retriever, clipping his fur can actually damage it. Ask your vet and groomer for advice. If you get the green light, go ahead and take Fido to the salon. Your pooch may look absolutely adorable with a lion cut!

Hydration Stations

Make sure that your canine companion always has fresh, clean water. We recommend setting out more than one water station, especially if you have a big home and/or a yard. Wash your pet’s bowls daily, as otherwise they’ll build up dust and bacteria.

Walk Schedule

When it’s really hot out, limit your pet’s outdoor time around midday, which is the hottest time of the day. Walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.

If Fido has a yard to play in, make sure he always has shade and shelter outside. If he has a doghouse, you may want to move it to a shady area. Also, be careful not to leave your dog outdoors too long. Our furry pals are both happier and healthier living inside with their human friends!

Watch For Warning Signs

Keep an eye out for signs that Fido is getting too hot. Some early symptoms include panting, drooling, a warm back, lethargy, pale or red gums, and trembling. If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately give your pooch water and take him to a cool area. If signs persist, contact your vet.

Kiddie Pool

Want to really get that cute tail going? Offer Fido a kiddie pool to splash around in. You can also set up a sprinkler, and let your canine buddy play in the spray. This can make for some super cute photos!
