Fall Care Tips for Dogs

Fall is a beautiful time of year, with the cooling weather and gorgeous foliage. However, autumn can be dangerous for dogs, so you may want to take precautions to keep your pup safe. A Green Bay, WI vet offers some fall care tips for dogs in this article.

At this time of year, many animals are looking for places to hibernate, and may be much more aggressive than usual. Keep Fido away from areas that could be housing wild animals.

Chemicals are another concern: in autumn, many people treat their lawns and gardens with fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals. Fido could ingest these toxins just by walking through a treated yard and licking his paws. Antifreeze is another chemical danger. It’s poisonous to pets, but has a taste many of them love. Mop up any spills right away, and use kitty litter or sand to cover damp spots.

Heating Elements

Fireplaces, candles, potpourri burners, and space heaters are all dangerous to dogs. Make sure that your canine pal can’t reach them. Keep candles and burners in high spots, and use grates on fireplaces.

Autumn decorations really have a lovely, whimsical feel. Unfortunately, Fido may be more interested in whether or not they taste good. Keep decorative items well out of paws’ reach.

It can get cold pretty quickly at this time of year. Make sure your dog is ready for the cold weather. If your pooch has thin fur, get him a few comfy doggy sweaters to wear on cold days. If Fido has a doghouse, make sure it is well-insulated and raised off the ground. You may want to hang thick rubber strips in the door, to block the wind. Last but not least, stock up on pet-safe de-icing products.

Make sure that your canine pal has a comfy bed to snuggle up in. If you want to pamper your pup, consider getting him a heated bed.

Fido tends to spend a good chunk of winter napping. Take some nice, long walks with your pet before the weather gets too cold. Also, indulge your canine buddy in some outdoor play sessions on those beautiful crisp fall days. This is also a great time for taking adorable doggy photos!
